Author Event: What We Lose/Zinzi Clemmons, in conversation with Clare Beams

We're thrilled to have this major up-and-comer in our store! According to The Millions, "the buzz around this debut is more like a roar." A sampling: "The debut of the year." - Vogue "Striking." - The Atlantic "Precise, charged vignettes." - HuffPo "Stunning." - GQ "Spectacular." - Booklist "An act of resistance and grace." - Kirkus "A short stunner." - Ploughshares "Poetic." - Glamour "A tour de force." - Bitch Mag "Lyrical prose." - Nylon "Powerful." - Cosmo "Hauntingly honest." - Redbook "Moving." - Vanity Fair "Richly volatile." - Wall Street Journal "REMEMBER THIS NAME: ZINZI CLEMMONS." - Essence.

Local fave Clare Beams (writer of a buzzy debut herself!) will interview Zinzi, who will also read from her novel. A preview: Raised in Pennsylvania, Thandi views the world of her mother’s childhood in Johannesburg as both impossibly distant and ever present. She is an outsider wherever she goes, caught between being black and white, American and not. She tries to connect these dislocated pieces of her life, and as her mother succumbs to cancer, Thandi searches for an anchor—someone, or something, to love.
