This is poet and essayist Julia Alvarez's first novel. A fictionalized account of the author's childhood, it is a coming-of-age story of four sisters who flee the Dominican Republic for NYC in the 1960s. They are caught between two worlds, the old and the new, and each sister discovers a new identity and her own distinct voice. Widely acclaimed when it was published in 1991.
