White Whale seeks a capable and passionate individual to grow our visibility and impact on the community through a variety of events. This position is approximately 25 hours per week, which includes three or four shifts in-store, an average of two events per week, and self-directed work from home. It requires evening and weekend availability, and may include occasional travel for educational and networking opportunities.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Expanding outreach to school librarians to coordinate children’s author visits, book fairs, and story times.

  • Creating and submitting author event proposals for publicity grids.

  • Pitching to publishers, in person and in writing, to build White Whale’s profile as a leading spot for touring authors.

  • Approaching local venues for large-scale offsite events.

  • In collaboration with and under supervision of the Owner/Events Director, scheduling in-store and offsite author events.

  • Developing additional event ideas to generate foot traffic.

  • Listing events on our website and social media platforms, and drafting copy for e-newsletter and press releases.

  • Ensuring merchandise is ordered for upcoming events.

  • Introducing authors at events.

  • Hand-selling to customers.

  • Receiving and returning books.

  • Writing shelf-talkers and creating displays.

  • Cleaning and tidying the store.

Qualifications and characteristics:

  • Love of books and in-depth knowledge of current market.

  • Friendly and outgoing demeanor.

  • Experience coordinating events, especially in children’s markets.

  • Exceptional written communication skills.

  • Confident and articulate public speaking ability.

  • Proficiency with social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; and with email marketing programs.

  • Outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to establish and meet deadlines and account for time spent.

  • Able to lift and move up to 40 pounds (boxes of books and tables).
